The Advent of a New Lectionary

November 2007

On the First Sunday of Advent, December 2nd 2007 Christ Church will change its schedule of Sunday readings from the Episcopal Lectionary to the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL). This is being done in congruence with the actions of the 75th General Convention of The Episcopal Church in 2006, which “direct[s] that the Revised Common Lectionary shall be the Lectionary of this Church, amending the Lectionary on pp. 889-921 of The Book of Common Prayer, effective the First Sunday of Advent, 2007.”

When I was at All Saints’ Church in Lakewood, we started using the RCL every Sunday in 2001.  We found very few differences by and large, and those we discovered were, we felt, for the better.  In the RCL, the Old Testament Lesson runs like the Epistle and Gospel lessons – consecutively throughout a specific book and not hopping around from book to book in order to find some agreement with the Gospel for the day.  What many folks found delightful was that during the Sundays after Pentecost, many of the great stories of the Old Testament unfolded week after week – tales that had never been heard in public worship in that church before.  One summer we went through the life of King David, and I had the opportunity to preach on this man, anointed by God and yet so very human in his flaws.

For further information on the use of the Revised Common Lectionary in the Episcopal Church  check out the Church’s web site (http://www.episcopalchurch.org/19625_ 19606_ ENG_HTM.htm).

And, of course, let me know what you think!
